Lecture Notes for Busy Students

SL - Student Learning

Busy students sometimes make poor use of posted lecture notes. Appropriate ‘helper’ slides, icons and callouts can reduce confusion and stress come study time, especially for students with overwhelming course loads.  In this workshop, we will walk through techniques developed for a required course in engineering, where they quickly led to large improvements in student understanding and course satisfaction. We will also look at ways to keep the addition of these tools quick and easy for the instructor, and how to apply the methods in a qualitative course.

Loving the Long Syllabus

SL - Student Learning

An appropriately crafted, long syllabus can reduce student uncertainty and minimize students’ questions and complaints. Having room to explain the meaning and reasoning behind policies enhances student understanding and acceptance of the same. In this workshop, we will walk through two syllabi: one for a technical, individual-focused required course, and the other for a qualitative elective with group work.  The sample syllabi are licensed under Creative Commons and can be freely adapted and remixed for your own courses.
